about

I made this project during the first week of quarantine 2020. Due to computer problems, I was making a lot of beats using a variety of hardware samplers and keyboards. The set up I used for this album centered around improvising loops with the Korg Kaoss Pad and Teenage Engineering OP-1, and then recording a performance of that loop onto an Roland SP-404SX. I found this process to be a fast way to generate ideas and have control over manipulating the different parts of the loop.

Each selection took between 10-15 minutes to make from conception to the final recording. After a version of the loop was recorded, it was deleted and another one was started.

I've decided to release these 23 selections from those sessions to capture a snapshot of the sonic quality of the process and of my mood during the time making it.

The album is called "Exercises" because the process kinda felt like a beat making training session where the goal is to get in a lot of reps. I also actually physically started exercising during this time, so the name "Exercises" with each of the beats being an "exercise" seemed appropriate.

Extra big shoutout to my friend DYSK, who I sent the album to and he proceeded to make a bunch of really awesome video clips with the beats on them. It was obvious to ask him to do the album art for the project and I'm very thankful for all he's done.

Thanks for checking it out.
